Dinant - doing the tourist thing

Image
Total trip journey 520 miles Distance today 0 miles The Mighty Wing got the day off today, left under wraps outside our digs. The day started late as we were both shattered and stayed in bed until 10am (well we are on holiday). We braved the very steep stairs down from our room and visited a  local boulangerie for ‘breakfast’ coffee and cake. We tried practicing some French but were just met with confused stares so opted for the universal language of pointing which the staff seemed to be fluent in. We then visited the  Notre Dame de Dinant with its stunning stain-glass window, apparently the most impressive in Europe. Then onto the Citadel. We had a choice, 408 steps or the cable car. £33 got us both in and a boat ride later on. Obviously if the cable car was not included in the entrance fee we would have opted for the steps.  Deb managed to get herself locked on the wrong side of the automatic cable car gate much to the amusement of everyone queuing. Total trip journey 520 miles Distance today 106 Is that wardrobe empty? Yes Wheres my boots? In the wardrobe So it’s not empty then? Yes, except for your boots And so the challenge of packing everything up to get back into the Mightly Wing with the tiny luggage space was underway. I popped out to get a couple of coffees from McDonalds only to discover the don’t open until 10. 10? WTF. So we are hitting the road without a caffeine hit, this could get messy, In the underground car park Deb ran off to ask a parking attendant on a push bike how we pay. Turns out he wasn’t a parking attendant but a policemen who was ‘searching for a criminal’ and didn’t appreciate the interruption. Anyway, we figured it out and headed out of Brugge but not before taking a wrong turn riding down a cycle path much to the annoyance of some cyclists….chill people chill. We took a slowish route down towards Dinant. Flipping ek it’s hot. Says 30c  (33c for some of the day)  but feels warmer. I have been...

Beer Chocolate and Boats

Total mileage for trip 414 Todays mileage 0 Day spent in Brugge sampling waffles, beer, chocolate and people watching, perfect way to spend a hot, 28c, day. They were all nice but I followed up with a pint of St Bernardus which should tell you which was the best. We walked and then drank, walked and then eat, did some more walking followed by some more drinking and popped into a few tourist hotspots (see below). This was followed with some walking, drinking and eating.  We popped into the ‘ Basilica of the Holy Blood’ and queued to see christs blood (no photos and we were not allowed and it seemed a little wrong anyway although it did not seem to stop some people) . At one drinking hole we got chatting to a couple of locals. One of them, Frederik, was 84 years old sitting drinking wine and watching the world go by. Initially he seemed like a lovely old gentleman who wanted to share the history of his home town but we quickly realised he wanted us to adopt him and we had to make our...
