Into Germany

After leaving our fantastic digs in Thiaucourt-Regniéville, We visited Saint Mihiel American Cemetery just up the road. This war cemetery is spectacularly well maintained.

It is located almost at the center of the Saint Mihiel  battle fought from 12–15 September 1918. 4,153 war dead of the United States of America from World War I rest here. Most of those buried here gave their lives in the great attack which reduced the salient in September 1918. Additionally, the names of 284 Americans whose remains were never recovered or not identified are inscribed on the end walls of the museum.

A bronze rosette marks the names of those who were subsequently found. 117 headstones mark the graves of

"unknowns"

The construction and care of this 40.5-acre cemetery and memorial are the responsibility of the American Battle Monuments Commission, an agency of the United States government. Use of the land was granted, in perpetuity, by the people of France.

It was a big days riding for Deb but we crossed the Vosges mountains and the riding roads were some of the best I have done.
There is nothing more comfortable to complete it on than the Mighty Wing and she handles surprisingly well. I do wish she had more ground clearance though as you are always on edge on the tight twisties wondering if the pegs are going to grind out.

We stopped at tobacco France near the junction of the grand canal and the Rhine River.
We had to stop because Deb had literally fallen asleep on the back of the wing it’s that comfy. If I had known she had nodded off I would have took advantage and gone a little quicker around the twistiest. Red wine at lunch seems to help (for pillion not driver).

Wow this place is busy, the French really like their Tobacco. Deb braved the portaloo and we set off to cross the boarder into Germany.

Our digs are located in Schonach which is just a couple of  miles from Triberg, home of the Cookoo Clocks. Deb is like a kid knowing she is going to a sweet shop tomorrow she is so excited.
We basically have our own modern house to ourselves with a fantastic view. Anna, our host owns a few houses and our neighbours turned out to be Irish and were kind enough to back their car up so we could park the Mighty Wing in front of the garage.
We popped on the bike to Triberg quickly to get fuel and something for Tea in Lidl and were stoped in the car park by a very excited German who was driving a Honda CR-V and had therefor decided we were in some form of Honda club together. I thought he was going to wet himself with excitement when I reved the engine up for him.

Tomorrow, Cookoo clocks, it’s like the night before Christmas for Deb, not sure I will get her to sleep.
